Water Pressure Tank Installation – Things You Need to Know

A water pressure tank is a solution to many problems. For example, it can help alleviate a slow dripping water issue. In addition, it can prolong the life of your pump. Installing a tank is not easy and may require the assistance of a plumber. There are some things that you can do before starting the project.

It is a good idea to ensure that the pump motor controller box is connected to the correct power source. Some localities require licensed electricians to handle electrical work, so be sure to check ahead of time.

Installing a pressure switch is the next step. This is a simple device that helps regulate the pressure in your system. It’s usually located close to the pump. Before you attach the pressure tank to the main supply line, make sure the switch is installed. It’s also wise to choose a water pressure tank that’s not too close to the switch. You don’t want the water to run off your tank before you can turn it on.

Mounting your tank on a base is necessary if it’s larger than the one you have now. Many tanks come pre-mounted with bases to facilitate installation. To allow the pressure to escape, an additional relief valve should be installed. This valve is especially helpful if you’re installing the tank in a place that’s difficult to reach.

An isolation valve will also be needed on the pressure tank line. This prevents water from leaking back into your well. You’ll also need to install a T-fitting to redirect the flow of water to your tank.

To complete this task you will need to have a socket and an adjustable ratchet. To tighten your pipes, you will also require a pipe wrench. You should use at least three layers of plumber’s tape to cover the threads of your inlet and the out stubs.

A tire gauge is another item you may need. The tire gauge allows you to check the water level in your pressure tank. To learn how to best use the tank, you can refer to the instructions manual included with it. You can also attach a hose to the drain at the top of the tank to easily drain sediment valves.

You can find a water pressure tank anywhere in your piping system. Most of them have an outlet and inlet. If necessary, they can be connected to your water filter system. Mount your tank either on top of your pump or directly on to the outlet pipework. In fact, some tanks actually have a T-junction so that you can easily detach it from the waterline.

You will also need to ensure that your pressure tank is compatible with your existing plumbing. For example, if you’re replacing a water storage tank, be sure to choose a model with threaded connections on the inlet and outlet. This will make the process of attaching your water line to the tank much simpler.
