Business gas safety certificate

Introduction

The law says you must have a Safety Certificate from a Gas Safe registered business if you have gas equipment in your industry.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) runs and maintains the register of gas engineers who are competent to work safely and legally on gas appliances.

An engineer on this register is a Gas Safe Registered engineer or Gas Safe Installer.

We’ll only come out to check your appliances if they’re listed on the certificate. It could be dangerous if you don’t let us check all your devices every year, so please ensure everything’s listed.

The law says you must have a Safety Certificate.

The law says you must have a non domestic gas Safety Certificate from a Gas Safe registered business if you have gas equipment in your company.

The landlord is responsible for getting the certificates if you rent out the property containing gas appliances.

If your tenants use the property as their primary home and want to use any new appliance or fitting, they will need their certificate.

In this case, landlords can help by arranging this on behalf of their tenants or passing on information about what needs to be done to them directly.

If students live in shared houses that contain gas appliances, they’ll need to be aware that some fire alarms may not work if there is no valid certificate (and therefore no working detector).

This could mean that if there were an emergency at night when everyone was asleep, it would take longer for fire services to arrive because they would not know where they were going until someone contacted them from outside using 999 or 112 (depending on the country).

If everyone has been made aware beforehand, hopefully, everyone should be able to get out safely without any accidents.

What is a Business Gas Safety Certificate

A Business Gas Safety Certificate is a legal requirement. It’s your responsibility to ensure that any gas appliances in your business are checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

We can provide you with a certificate for your appliances, which will help you stay compliant and avoid potentially expensive fines.

The HSE also provides information on its website about the benefits of using a registered engineer, how to choose one, what they do, and how to recognize them.

Do I need to have my own Business Gas Safety Certificate?

In the UK, a legal requirement for businesses that use gas is to have a Safety Certificate from a Gas Safe registered company.

This certificate shows that your business has been inspected and is safe to use gas.

If you supply or hire gas equipment, this applies to you. For example, cookers, dishwashers, ovens, and sanitary ware use natural or bottled gas.

Then these items need to be checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer every year.

If you run a business that uses gas

If you run a business that uses gas, you are responsible for ensuring your gas appliances are checked annually by an engineer registered with Gas Safe Register.

Gas Safe Register is the only scheme that can certify engineers. Once registered, engineers will have passed an exam and be able to carry out a wide range of tests on all types of boilers and appliances within the home or business premises.

You may become aware of a leak or smell gas or be informed by someone else who smells it (such as neighbors).

In either case, please don’t ignore it! Get in touch immediately with your local Gas Safe Register engineer so they can investigate the cause and determine whether there’s any danger to anyone nearby.

It is illegal for any person (including children) to use any appliance unless it has been correctly installed, used correctly, and regularly maintained by manufacturers’ instructions.

If you do not comply with this requirement, you could face prosecution, for up to £20k per offense.
