Choosing a bath that lasts

Reinforced acrylic is light, warm to the touch and the most practical choice for upstairs bathrooms. Pressed steel is far more durable and better for rentals or heavy use, though it needs adequate floor support and feels colder. Freestanding baths look superb but need the floor checked for load and the waste position planned before delivery, because moving it later is a major job.

How a bath replacement is done

We isolate and drain the supply, cut out the old sealant and tiles where needed, and remove the old bath. The new bath is levelled on its cradle and feet, screwed to the frame, and the waste, trap and overflow are fitted and tested before it is boxed in. Panels go on last with removable fixings so the trap stays accessible, then the edge is sealed with a proper sanitary silicone bead.

The work involves re-siting the waste, forming a level or low-profile tray area, tanking the walls, and installing the enclosure and valve. We advise on whether the property will suffer at resale from losing its only bath before committing.

Water pressure and taps

A bath filler that dribbles is usually a pressure problem, not a tap problem. Gravity-fed systems with a low cold tank give poor flow to high-resistance mixers, and combi boilers limit the litres per minute you can draw. We measure the flow before recommending taps, and where necessary fit a pump or specify low-pressure-rated fittings so the new bath fills quickly.
