Waterproofing comes first
Tiles and grout are not waterproof — the tanking behind them is. In showers and wet areas we install a liquid or membrane tanking system over a stable substrate, dress it into corners and around pipe penetrations, and let it cure before tiling. This is the single biggest difference between a bathroom that lasts fifteen years and one that rots the joists below within three.
