A tray that flexes or creaks underfoot has lost its bedding or support, and the movement will eventually crack the seal. Discoloured grout at the base of the enclosure, a musty smell, lifting floor covering outside the shower, or a stain on the ceiling below all point to water escaping past the tray. The enclosure comes off, the tray is cut out, and the floor beneath is inspected — this is where we usually find the real damage. Any decayed timber is cut back and replaced. The new tray is bedded fully so there are no voids, levelled to the waste, and the waste and trap are fitted with future access in mind. The wall junction is tanked before tiles or upstands go back and the joint is sealed with sanitary silicone.
Stone resin is the tray we recommend most: rigid, quiet underfoot and resistant to flexing, which is what kills seals. Acrylic is lighter and cheaper but needs a supporting frame and careful bedding. A tileable former gives a continuous tiled floor and a flush, level-access finish, and is the right choice if you want a wet room appearance without rebuilding the whole floor.
Most repeat tray leaks come from the same three details: a tray bedded on dabs rather than fully supported, an untanked wall junction relying on silicone alone, and a waste connection that cannot be inspected.
