Shower pump repair and common faults

Most shower pump call-outs come down to four things. A pump that hums but does not run has usually seized after sitting idle or running dry. A pump that is suddenly loud has worn bearings or has lost its anti-vibration mounts and is transmitting noise into the joists. A pump that cuts in and out is seeing air in the supply or a flow switch that is sticking. A pump that will not start at all may simply not be getting the head of water it needs from the cold tank. We test each of these in turn before recommending a replacement.

Twin impeller shower pump repair

Twin impeller pumps boost hot and cold together to keep the shower thermostatically stable, and they are the type fitted in most gravity-fed homes. Because both sides must be fed properly, an imbalance — a restricted hot draw-off, a partially closed gate valve, a scaled Essex or Surrey flange — makes the pump cavitate and then fail. We check both feeds, correct the take-off arrangement where it is wrong, and replace worn impeller assemblies or the pump itself depending on age and condition.

Shower pump replacement

Replacement is the sensible answer when bearings have gone, the body is leaking, or the pump has run dry and cooked its seals. We size the replacement on the shower and the system rather than simply matching what was there: bar rating for the outlets served, single or twin impeller, and positive or negative head depending on the height of the cold tank above the pump. The new pump is mounted level on vibration feet, connected with flexible hoses, and the supply take-offs are corrected so the replacement is not damaged the same way.

Getting the supply right

Pumps fail early far more often from a poor supply than from a manufacturing defect. The cold feed must come from a tank with enough capacity and head, the hot must be drawn through a proper flange so the pump cannot pull air off the top of the cylinder, and both feeds should be in dedicated pipework rather than shared with other outlets. Where we see a repeat failure we fix the cause — tank, flange or pipe size — and tell you plainly if boosting the whole house or changing system type would be a better long-term answer.
